Science fiction and fantasy books are becoming more popular in seventh grade science classes, according to a new survey by a public education research firm.
But the survey also found that a small percentage of students surveyed have a high level of science literacy.
“The trend is in line with our research over the last year that science fiction and fantasy are increasingly popular and students have increased interest in the genre,” said Emily Gazzaniga, director of education and research at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
Gazzanaga says that while a lot of students may enjoy reading books like The Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter, they may be more interested in science fiction.
She told Business Insider that it’s important to remember that science books are a medium that can be used to express emotion, but they don’t necessarily have to be a science-themed book.
“It’s really about how you think about the characters and the themes of the book,” she said.
She also pointed out that science is not only a great subject for children, but also a great way to develop their social skills.
“The best way to learn to read science fiction is to read them and understand what the characters are doing,” she added.
“I think there’s so much more to science fiction than just reading science fiction.”
The survey surveyed more than 100 students from four of the country’s public elementary schools and found that the majority of students were interested in reading science-fiction, fantasy, and mystery stories.
“They’re also interested in books about science, biology, and other sciences, and science fiction novels are one of the most popular genres in their elementary school reading groups,” said Gazzinaga.
“Our survey suggests that this trend will continue and that science- and fantasy-themed books are also on the rise in seventh graders reading lists.”
There’s also a strong demand for science-related books in the secondary and college curriculum, so science fiction, fantasy and mystery should be part of that,” she continued.
The survey found that students who had a high science literacy level were also more likely to have fun and enjoy learning about science.
The survey also discovered that students from all backgrounds were reading science books.
While the survey showed a clear trend toward more science-based reading, Gazzenaga says it’s not necessarily a trend that has to do with gender.”
We’re seeing more female students who read science-oriented books, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re more interested,” she explained.”
Some girls are interested in it, and some boys are not.
It just means that a lot more girls are reading it than boys.”
The authors of the survey said that while they’re seeing a spike in interest in science-centric reading, they also feel there are some teachers who are limiting it.”
A lot of schools are trying to encourage science literacy with new activities and reading materials,” said Rebecca Levenson, president of the Association for Science Literacy.
Levenson said that parents and teachers need to be educated about what’s expected of students.”
While Gazzannaga says she thinks parents should be the ones who are trying and teaching their children science-focused books, she also says that a teacher can do their best to make sure their students are aware of the books they’re reading.””

“Teachers can take a very clear look at the content, the titles and the content and what they’re trying, and then decide if that’s what’s appropriate for their students,” she stated.
In addition to science-loving parents, Gannaga believes that many teachers are just being overly sensitive.
“Many of us are just reading a little too much science fiction,” she lamented.
“Science is about trying to understand the world, but there’s a lot that happens in the world that’s not in the books.”
And it’s great to be reading books that explain what’s happening in the universe and what happens when things happen in the real world, so that we can make sense of what’s going on.
